Swiss pairing Marcel Fässler and Jean-Denis Deletraz took their Phoenix Carsport Racing/GMAC-Corvette Z06 to Third place in the fourth round of the FIA GT Championship, held at Oschersleben in Germany.
And there was more success for Corvette at the twisty track: Czech driver duo Jiri Skula and Martin Matzke claimed victory in the second race of the weekend in the FIA GT3 European Championship. This achievement was the first win for a Corvette team this season.
The fourth round of the GT Championship attracted 13 GT1 cars, among them four Corvettes. The Selleslagh Racing Team from Belgium entered its Z06 with Christophe Bouchut/Xavier Maasse at the wheel. The German Phoenix Carsport Racing team had its two GMAC-liveried Corvette Z06s with Marcel Fässler/Jean-Denis Deletraz and Mike Hezemans/Fabrizio Gollin, while the Austrian AT Racing outfit entered a Corvette C5-R for Aliaksandr Talkanitsa/Wolfgang Kaufmann.
In qualifying, Bouchut was the fastest Corvette driver, putting his Selleslagh-car third on the grid. The two Phoenix entries were sixth and eighth with Hezemans and Fässler behind the respective wheels, with Wolfgang Kaufmann qualifying 18th.
During the race, there was a nice battle at the front of the field between the Aston Martins, the Maseratis, and the Corvettes. In the closing stages, Fässler put the pressure on former champion Michael Bartels in a Maser. Bartels made a mistake under pressure, which allowed Fässler to move up into Third place and claim another podium finish for the Phoenix Carsport Vette. Teammates Gollin/Hezemans finished Sixth, only 20 seconds behind their sister car one place ahead of the SRT-Corvette of Bouchut/Maassen. Kaufmann/Talkanitsa retired early.
In the points standings after four rounds, Hezemans/Gollin and Bouchut/Maassen are now tied in second place, only two points behind the championship leaders, while Fässler/Deletraz are ranked fourth.
In the FIA GT3 European Championship, there were five Corvettes on the grid, with two entries each for Martini-Callaway Racing (Arnaud Peyroles/James Ruffier and Alois Meir/Sascha Bert) and MM-Racing (Michael Vorba/Vladimir Hladík and Martin Matzke/Jiri Skula). Marc Sourd Racing entered the fifth car, with Marc Sourd/Johan Charpilienne driving.
In the first race, Matzke/Skula finished Sixth as the best-placed Corvette pairing, one place ahead of Meir/Bert. Peyroles/Ruffier were Tenth. Vorba/Hladík and Sourd/Charpilienne retired, the former team still classified Twenty-sixth.
The second race brought the first victory of the season for a Corvette team, with Martin Matzke and Jiri Skula claiming a commanding win. Peyroles/Ruffier finished Fourth, Sourd/Charpilienne Fifth, while Vorba/Hladík and Meir/Bert retired. After six races, Corvette duo Peyroles/Ruffier are leading the championship standings.
